Introduction

Display Maestro allows you to view and set all resolutions available from every attached display, regardless of wether or not the operating system belies they are safe.

One of the most useful features in Display Maestro is the ability to choose 256 color bit-depth mode in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Many old games do not automatically switch display bit depth, and require you to change it manually. Unfortunately, Mac OS X 10.5 removed the ability to set this in the System Preferences->Displays panel.

When open, Display Maestro appears in your menu bar near the clock at the top right. Simply click and select the display, resolution, and desired bit-depth.

Troubleshooting

Millions of Colors is the Only Bit Depth Option

Some new Macs have a feature called "Automatic graphics switching." This feature automatically chooses a lower power video card in the machine to conserve energy when needed. This is useful in laptops to increase battery life. However, this may result in the "Millions of colors" option being the only available display depth in Display Maestro. To disable this feature, and regain 256-color or Thousands of Colors mode, go into the "Energy Saver" preferences pane, and disable "Automatic graphics switching"
